Day two kicked off with the women's quarter-finals. Top seed Millie
Tomlinson won through in three sets, and while second seed Torrie
Malik's progression was relatively straightforward she did drop one
game. The other two quarter-finals were both ferociously competitive.
Mariam Eissa twice came from behind against Nika Urh, before
dramatically mounting one more comeback from 10-7 down in the fifth to
win the decider 13-11. On the other glass back court, Katie Wells kept
her cool to come from 2-0 down to win 3-2.
In the men's quarters, second seed Owain Taylor and 3/4 seed Perry Malik
secured their places in the semis with comfortable wins. Unusually for a
quarter-final, the top seed Ben Smith was pushed to five sets, although
he did win the fifth game by a comfortable scoreline so was never really
in danger of going out. The unseeded Michael Andrews caused an upset by
knocking out 3/4 seed Will Salter in three.
Millie Tomlinson proved too much for 13-year-old Mariam Eissa in the
first women's semi-final. The other was much closer. Katie Wells
recovered from an 11/7 loss in the first game to lead 2-1. In the fourth
game, she threatened to come back from 10/6 down when she won a string
of three consecutive points, but Torrie was the beneficiary of a nick
just in the nick of time to take the game 11/9 and bring the score level
at 2-2 despite conceding a conduct stroke earlier in the set. Katie had
the better of the opening stages of the fifth and final game, but Torrie
found her flow and won it 11/8 to make Sunday's final.
Ben Smith won the first men’s semi-final, but as in the quarters he was
forced to play five sets to secure his victory - after Michael Andrews
raced into a 2-0 lead. Second seed Owain Taylor finished off a simpler
journey to the final with a 3-0 win against 3/4 seed Perry Malik.

Preview
World
#53
Millie Tomlinson
(right) is looking to add to her five Boston Open titles as Boston
Squash and Racketball Club holds the 25th edition of the annual
tournament this weekend.
The recent London Open semi-finalist won Boston’s women’s event every
year between 2014 and 2018 prior to reaching a career high of world #20
in 2019.
The women’s second seed,
Torrie Malik,
is already the world #84 at the age of 18. She won the British Junior
U19 Open and the Charing Cross Classic in the summer, as well as the
David Lloyd Open, the Czech Open and the British Junior U19 Nationals in
recent months.
Like top seed Millie, 3/4 seed
Sanne Veldkamp
from the Netherlands plays for Nottingham in the Premier Squash League.
Lincolnshire’s
Katie Wells,
who reached her highest world ranking so far of #110 earlier this year,
completes the seedings in the women’s draw.
In the men’s event, another of Lincolnshire’s own -
Ben Smith
(above)- leads the draw. The world #92 recently won both the Swiss Open
in October and the Romanian Open in November. He finished runner-up to
Joe Lee at the Boston Open three years ago.
Welsh #3
Owain Taylor
is the men’s second seed and is another member of Nottingham’s
PSL squad.
Will Salter
is a 3/4 seed, as is
Perry Malik
who beat Will on his way to the
final of the David Lloyd Open last month. Like his sister, Perry won the
Charing Cross
Classic earlier this year. The 5/8 seeds are
Jared Carter,
Tayne Turnock,
Moeen Ud Din
and
Paul Broadberry.
