Malaysia’s Wen Li Lai has won her second title in as many months, after coming through the Kinetic 5k Challenger without dropping a single game.

The Malaysian came into the Challenger 5 level women’s draw as the top seed, and started her week in Boynton Beach, Florida with a commanding performance. She dropped just five points in an 11-0, 11-3, 11-2 victory over Ecuador’s Emilia Falconi on Tuesday evening.

Her quarter final contest was trickier, as she needed two tie-breaks in a straight games victory over American junior Riya Navani. Lai won both the first and third games 12-10 in that win, before then dropping only twelve points in the semi-finals against another unseeded American, Anna Shumway.

The final saw Lai take on No.5 seed Maria Moya of Ecuador, and once again, the Malaysian made it look comfortable. She won the first couple of games 11-7 before the third was taken 11-5, as she claimed her second win of the season.

The win comes four weeks after her first victory of the campaign, at the Greenwich Open. She was No.2 seed that week and got the better of England’s Alicia Mead, the top seed, in the final.
Semi Final

Lai and Moya Set For Final Battle

Malaysia’s Wen Li Lai and Ecuadorian Maria Moya will meet in the final of the women’s event at the Kinetic 5k Challenger in Florida.

Top seed Wen Li Lai took on unseeded American Anna Shumway in the last four of the Challenger 5 level competition, and she was in complete control. The Malaysian dropped just twelve points in a 24-minute, straight games victory over the American, winning 11-2, 11-6, 11-4.

She will now face Ecuador’s Maria Moya in the final on Friday evening, after the Ecuadorian fought past Japan’s Risa Sugimoto in a four-game battle. Moya won the first on a tie-break, before easily taking the second 11-4. The unseeded Japanese player fought back to take the third game, but the No.5 seed won the fourth to move through to the final.

The final of the Kinetic Women’s Challenger will take place on Friday, November 25, with Wen Li Lai and Maria Moya doing battle for the Challenger 5 level title.
Quarter Finals

Sugimoto Wins All-Japanese Clash

The quarter finals of the Kinetic Women’s Challenger saw an all-Japanese battle, with unseeded Risa Sugimoto downing No.3 seed Erisa Sano Herring to make the last four.

Sugimoto, the World No.298, got the better of the No.8 seed in the opening round, and came up against compatriot Herring on day two of the Challenger 5 level competition in Florida.

After winning the first game, she saw her fellow Japanese player win the second on a tie-break 15-13, before then taking the third as well. However, Sugimoto fought back to win both of the last two games to secure a victory, and to move through to the last four.

She will now face Ecuador’s Maria Moya, after the No.5 seed got the better of No.2 seed Hannah Blatt in straight games on Wednesday evening. The Ecuadorian was in sublime form, winning 11-6, 11-4, 11-4 to move into the semi-finals in Boynton Beach.

The other semi-final will see top seed Wen Li Lai take on American Anna Shumway, after the pair both came through their respective last eight clashes in straight games. Shumway downed Mary Mijas, while the Malaysian beat Riya Navani.

The semi-finals of the women’s event at the Kinetic 5k Challenger will take place in Florida on Thursday, November 24.
