Top seed Klara Moller secured her maiden Tour title, as she won an all-Danish final at the Wake Up Squash Angers International on Friday evening.

The World No.116 came into the Challenger 3 level competition as the top seed, and she started off with a tricky five-game battle against Portugal’s Catarina Nunes. Moller led by two games, but saw the Portuguese woman fight back to level the contest. The Dane was able to gather herself, though, and regrouped to battle through the deciding fifth game, winning it 11-9 to advance to the last eight.

From there on, it was slightly easier for the Dane. She claimed victory over France’s Ella Galova, the No.4 seed, in the quarter finals, despite losing a third game tie-break 15-13. She then went on to face another Frenchwoman, in No.7 seed Kara Lincou, in the semis. Once again, she lost a third game tie-break, but the Dane still came through in four games.

The final pitted Moller against compatriot and No.3 seed Caroline Lyng in an all-Danish final. A tight first game went the way of the top seed, and thanks to that, she was able to carry the momentum throughout the rest of the game. Moller won in straight games to secure her maiden Tour title, winning 11-9, 11-4, 11-8 in 29 minutes in Angers.

The Danish duo of Klara Moller and Caroline Lyng are among the four semi-finalists at the Wake Up Squash Angers International.

Top seed Moller survived a five-game battle on the opening day, and she came up against Frenchwoman Ella Galova in the quarter finals. The Dane took the opening game on a tie-break 13-11, before then doubling her advantage. The third also went to a tie-break, which she lost out in 15-13. However, Moller then regrouped to win the fourth 11-7 to book her spot in the last four. She will now take on Kara Lincou, after the Frenchwoman defeated Switzerland’s Ambre Allinckx in three.

The other Dane in the draw, Caroline Lyng, made her way into the semi-finals with a win over France’s Ana Munos. The No.3 seed won the opening game comfortably, but then saw both the second and third games go to tie-breaks. She won the second 13-11, before then going even further, taking the third 14-12, to advance to the semis. Lyng will now take on Sanne Veldkamp in the last four, after the Dutchwoman defeated Hungary’s Kincso Szasz in straight games.

Round 1

Lincou Downs Allen On Home Soil

Frenchwoman Kara Lincou caused the day’s big upset in Angers, as she defeated Scotland’s No.2 seed Katriona Allen in a five-game battle.

Due to some late withdrawals from the Challenger 3 level competition, the draw was changed around at the last moment, propelling No.7 seed Lincou into a battle with Allen on the opening day.

She started well, winning the first game 11-9, but then could only muster eight points across the next two games, as the Scot fought back to lead 2-1. Allen had her chances to go on and take the win, but Lincou fought back, winning the fourth game 11-9. The fifth was also tight, and it was the Frenchwoman that came through to win it, also taking the decider 11-9 to book her spot in the last eight.

She will now take on Switzerland’s Ambre Allinckx, who won the Open Feminin du Jeu de Paume at the weekend, in the quarter finals. The Swiss woman defeated compatriot Stella Kaufmann in less than 20 minutes to advance.

Elsewhere, two other French players, in No.4 seed Ella Galova and No.5 seed Ana Munos both scored opening day wins. Galova defeated compatriot Lilou Brevard-Belliot in three, while Munos got the better of Dutchwoman Naomi Nohar. The Danish duo of Klara Moller and Caroline Lyng were the other two women to win on the opening day, while Hungary’s Kincso Szasz and Sanne Veldkamp of the Netherlands received byes due to those late withdrawals, and will now face each other on Wednesday.
