Garcia Delights Home Crowd
The Faltami Squash Inn Classic came to its conclusion on Sunday
afternoon in Mexico City, and home favourite Diana Garcia lifted the
title.
Garcia came into the Challenger 5 level women’s competition as the top
seed, and she had the pressure on her as the Mexican No.1 playing on
home soil.
She started strongly, dropping just ten points in an 11-2, 11-2, 11-6
win over compatriot Margarita Gomez in the opening round. That was
followed by her toughest test of the week, as she had to regroup after
losing a two-game advantage in the quarter finals.
Garcia found herself two games to the good against Colombia’s Lucia
Bautista, but the tournament’s No.8 seed fought back to level the match.
The Mexican was able to find her form once again though, and won the
fifth 11-8 to move through to the last four.
In the semis, the World No.88 came from a game down to defeat Malaysia’s
Yasshmita Jadishkumar, dropping just eight points over the last three
games of the contest. The final saw Garcia take on another Colombian, in
No.2 seed Laura Tovar, and she won a four-game battle, coming through
11-6, 7-11, 11-7, 11-5 to secure her second title of the season. |
