Senthilkumar & Fernandez Claim Gibraltar Open Trophies
India’s Velavan Senthilkumar and Spain’s Marta Dominguez Fernandez are
the 2023 Gibraltar Open, PSA Challenger 5 champions after they overcame
World No.85 Ivan Perez and World No.134 Hana Ismail, respectively, last
night at the Europa Sports Centre.
Senthilkumar, the World No.117 based in Chennai, has won the sixth PSA
title of his career following an 18-16, 11-8, 11-7 victory over Perez
after 65 minutes of action.
Senthilkumar was unseeded for the event but caused a number of upsets en
route to the title decider, beating No.3 seed Emyr Evans and No.7 seed
Toufik Mekhalfi earlier in the tournament, as well as England’s Miles
Jenkins, who had taken out top seed Martin Svec in the opening round.
The first game of the final lasted a mammoth 32 minutes, with both
players exchanging game balls until Senthilkumar finally converted after
a lengthy tie-break. An uncharacteristic run of errors from Perez gave
Senthilkumar an early 5-1 lead in the second game, which Senthilkumar
extended to 8-1. Perez recovered to 8-6, only for Senthilkumar to earn
his first game ball 10-6, converting the third to take a 2-0 lead.
The man from India dominated the start of the third game to storm into
an 8-2 lead, which he extended to five championship balls. Perez saved
two of them but couldn’t deny Senthilkumar from closing out the victory
to earn his fourth PSA Challenger title of the campaign.

Top seed Fernandez captured the third title of her career as she took
out Ismail by an 11-8, 11-7, 11-7 in 33 minutes.
Dominguez had dropped just a single game in the build up to the final
and swiftly picked up where she left off, taking an 8-1 lead in the
opening game before holding off a late fightback from Ismail to
establish a one-game advantage. A strong start to the second game soon
saw Fernandez double her lead, putting one hand on the trophy.
Ismail started the third game well and put in some beautiful winners to
earn a 3-1 lead, but the consistency, accuracy and pressure from
Fernandez soon saw her turn things around. At 10-7 up, Fernandez
converted her championship ball at the first time of asking to seal her
first PSA Challenger trophy since December 2021.

Preview
The Gibraltar Open gets underway on Wednesday, with the tournament
returning for an 11th time on the PSA Challenger Tour.
The tournament first took place in 2012, with the event adding a women’s
draw in 2021. The likes of German Raphael Kandra, England’s Nick Wall
and Frenchman Sebastien Bonmalais have all won this event in the past.
Spain’s Edmon Lopez and Egypt’s Rana Ismail were the victors last year,
with the Spaniard returning to defend his title at the Europa Sports
Center from Wednesday, June 28 to Saturday, July 1.
He will be among the 9/16 seeding bracket, and one of two Spaniards in
action this week in Gibraltar. Ivan Perez will be the other, with Perez
being the No.2 seed for the competition. The Czech Republic’s Martin
Svec will be the competition’s top seed, with Welshman Emyr Evans and
England’s James Peach making up the top four seeds.
England’s Perry Malik, Frenchman Toufik Mekhalfi, Welshman Owain Taylor
and the Czech Republic’s Daniel Mekbib round out the eight seeds for the
Challenger 5 level competition.
Spain’s Marta Dominguez Fernandez will be the top seed for the women’s
competition, with England’s Torrie Malik as the No.2 seed. The
Englishwoman will be looking for her seventh title of the season, which
would be a Tour-leading mark.
Compatriots Saran Nghiem and Kiera Marshall will also be among the eight
seeds for the women’s draw. They will be joined by Singapore’s Au Yeong
Wai Yhann, Austrian No.1 Jacqueline Peychar, France’s Lauren Baltayan
and Danish No.1 Klara Moller.
