Round 1

Elshafei Wins All-Egyptian Final

Egypt’s Yassin Elshafei was the victor at the UCNY PSA Classic last night, as he defeated compatriot Aly Hussein in straight games.

ElShafei came into the Challenger 5 competition as the top seed, and started his week in New York City with a tough test. He had to go the distance to overcome Brazil’s Diego Gobbi, eventually winning the deciding game 11-3 to advance to the last eight.

He then had to go to five in his quarter final match as well, against Mexican Alejandro Reyes. The tournament’s No.7 seed led by two games to one, but Elshafei turned the match around, dropping just eight points across the last two games to move through to the semis.

From there, the Egyptian did not drop a game. He defeated Pakistani No.3 seed Noor Zaman in straight games in the semis, before then coming up against Egypt’s Aly Hussein in the final. Elshafei won in straight games once more, clinching a third game tie-break 12-10 to secure his third Tour title.
