Romiglio and Bautista Win Titles

Argentina’s Leandro Romiglio and Colombia’s Lucia Bautista were the victors at the Regatas Resistencia Open this weekend.

Bautista came into the tournament, only her third on the PSA Tour, unseeded, and went on an incredible run which then saw her defeat four of the top five seeds to take a maiden title.

She started the week with a comfortable victory over Victoria Lischuk, before then going the distance in her second round contest. The Colombian had to come from 2-1 down to get the better of No.4 seed Sohaila Ismail, before then beating England’s Polly Clark, the No.5 seed, in straight games.

In the semi-finals, Bautista came up against compatriot and Colombian No.1 Laura Tovar, and took the win in a tough four-game contest. That set up a final clash with Ukraine’s Alina Bushma. It went to five, and Bautista had to regroup after losing the fourth 11-2. She did so brilliantly, dropping just three points in the deciding game to secure her maiden PSA Tour title.

Argentine Leandro Romiglio was the men’s top seed, and the home favourite in Resistencia this week. After receiving a first round bye, he then won all four of his matches in straight games to seal the deal on a great week.

He started in the second round against Frenchman Toufik Mekhalfi, before then overcoming the challenge of compatriot Jeremias Azana in an all-Argentinian clash. Tournament wildcard Matias Knudsen, who had already seen off a couple of seeded players to reach the semis, was beaten in the last four.

The final saw Romiglio take on Switzerland’s Yannick Wilhelmi, who was the victor at last week’s Villa la Angostura Patagonia Open, the first event on the Tour de las Americas. However, the home favourite was too strong, dropping just 11 points in a comfortable straight games victory to take the title in his home nation.

Leandro Romiglio will be the men's top seed this week in Resistencia

The Tour de las Americas continues this week in Argentina with the Regatas Resistencia Open, which will feature both a men’s and women’s Challenger 10 level competition.

The tournament will be held for the 11th time, and there have been some big names to have won the title. World No.1s Diego Elias and Mostafa Asal have both claimed the top prize in Resistencia, along with Mexican No.1 Leonel Cardenas and Colombia’s Ronald Palomino, who won this event last year.

Home favourite Leandro Romiglio will be aiming to add his name to that list this week. The Argentine No.1 will be the tournament’s top seed, with American Spencer Lovejoy, Germany’s Yannik Omlor and England’s Tom Walsh among the top four seeds.

Switzerland’s Yannick Wilhelmi and France’s Toufik Mekhalfi, the pair that played in the final of the Villa la Angostura Patagonia Open final on Sunday, will also be aiming to keep their good form going. The Swiss No.3 will be joined in the top eight seeds by Edwin Clain, Andres Herrera and the second Argentinian, Jeremias Azana.

For the first time, the Regatas Resistencia Open will also play host to a women’s draw. Dutchwoman Tessa ter Sluis will be the top seed, with Colombia’s Laura Tovar also among the favourites in her home continent.

Ukrainian Alina Bushma, Egypt’s Sohaila Ismail, England’s Polly Clark, Hungarian No.1 Kincso Szasz, Japan’s Erisa Sano Herring and a second Dutchwoman, in Sanne Veldkamp, will make up the rest of the top eight seeds in the tournament.

There will be six Argentinians in action in the women’s draw, with Pliar Etchechoury and Paula Rivero as the highest ranked of those. Paraguay’s Nicole Krauch Bareiro and Argentine Valentin Torres Rolfi won the Liga del Norte Junior to pre-qualify for the tournament as well.

The event takes place from Tuesday, May 9 to Saturday, May 13 at the Club Regatas Resistencia in the Argentinian city of Resistencia. Follow the PSA Challenger Tour on Twitter and Facebook for daily updates from the event.
