Rösner wins Squash Player’s Player of the Month
award
Germany’s
Simon Rösner has been named Squash Player’s Male Player of the Month
for August after winning the World Games for the first time.
It was third time lucky in the event for the 29-year-old, who
finished runner-up to France’s Gregory Gaultier four years ago and
lost in the second round of his World Games debut in 2009.
"It's amazing," said the top seed after his 15-13, 11-6, 9-11, 11-8
victory over 5/8 seed Gregoire Marche, of France. "I am truly over
the moon!
"Greg is such a tough competitor. In that third game, when I was 7-3
up, he was fighting hard and I might have been too impatient. In the
fourth I needed to be 100% focussed - actually 200% - to get
through.
"It was such a great feeling playing in front of such a great crowd
- and it's been like this since day one. That's what makes this
event so special!"
Rösner’s win in Wroclaw, Poland, was only his second tournament
title of 2017. The other was the German National Championship in
February, when he was also the no.1 seed.
"I try and turn it into a positive,” he said of the favourite tag.
“I think the most important thing about tonight was that I played
more patiently."
