January - MEN'S PLAYER OF THE MONTH

Gawad wins Squash Player’s Player of the Month award

Egypt’s Karim Abdel Gawad is Squash Player’s Player of the Month, after winning back-to-back tournaments in December, including the $180,500 Black Ball Open in his home country.

The 27-year-old followed his expected success in the $53,000 Pakistan Open, where he was the favourite, with a surprise triumph in Cairo, where he beat world no.1 Mohamed ElShorbagy, no.4 Tarek Momen and no.2 Ali Farag to win his 20th PSA Tour title.

Gawad, who defeated second seed Diego Elias 3/0 in the Karachi final to end a 20-month wait for a PSA Tour trophy, re-entered the world’s top five after a nine-month absence as a result of his consecutive titles.

“I’ve been working so hard to try and get back to my form that I used to play, and I’m really happy to be back and end the year with a major tournament,” he said following his 3/1 victory over Farag in the Cairo decider.

“I had so many times where I was down. All those months, all those days, I pushed and pushed. There were bad times, really bad times, but my team handled those bad moments. It finally paid off this week and I’m back to my form.

“It’s been a very tough tournament, especially for me as I’ve not been playing at this level for so long now, and to be back and winning this major tournament means a lot to me.”
