Tomlinson Takes Edinburgh Open Title

England’s Mille Tomlinson captured her second PSA World Tour crown of the season after sweeping past German second seed Sina Wall in the final of the Edinburgh Sports Club Open with an impressive straight games triumph.

Tomlinson was irrepressible throughout the event and failed to drop a game as she roared to the title. Wall had also been in decent form up to the final, dropping just a single game to France’s Chloe Mesic in the last four.

23-year-old Tomlinson surged to a straightforward victory in game one after her superior court coverage and devastating drops enabled her to build up an 11-3 lead to go a game to the good.

Wall improved markedly in the second game and fought Tomlinson tooth and nail for supremacy but succumbed to an 11-7 defeat to go two games behind.

Tomlinson kept up her momentum in the third to wrap up the victory in just three games and earn her first PSA World Tour title of 2016.

Alan Clyne takes the men's title after Tom Richards has to retire through injury

Greg Lobban – Scottish no. 2 and world no. 37 gave it his all in exciting all court 5 setter against Tom Richards – world no. 23, but it was the classy English man who took it in the end 6/11 11/6 7/11 11/9 11/5

Alan Clyne – Scottish no. 1 and world no 31 then lifted the roof with a 5 set win over 5 times Champion and world no 15 Daryl Selby which sets up an eagerly anticipated final with Richards tomorrow

The Edinburgh Sports Club Open and Graded Championships

The Edinburgh Sports Club Open 2016 is the biggest tournament on the BSPA calendar and the biggest annual squash event in Scotland.

The Mens draw is headed by defending champion Daryl Selby and world number 15 who will be aiming to win it for the 6th time. Seeded to meet him in the final is world number 23 Tom Richards. Top Scots Alan Clyne (world ranked 31) and Greg Lobban (world ranked 37) are seeded 3 / 4 and will be looking to upset the seedings and become the first Scot to win the event since former world number 1 John White in 2004.

Local interest sees ESC players Dougie Kempsell (world ranked 99) seeded 5/8 and Rory Stewart looking to take some scalps and progress to the latter stages, whilst Kevin Moran and Jamie Henderson will also be competing ensuring full turnout from the Scottish Team.

The Ladies WSA draw is headed by Egnland’s Millie Tomlinson (WR 45) with Sina Wall of Germany (WR 70) seeded to meet her in the final. Scotland’s up and coming Elspeth Young gets the wildcard into the main draw and ESC players Carrie Hallam, Georgia Adderley, Senga Macfie and Sue Dalrymple will compete in the qualifying in the hope of making the main draw.

The graded event which runs alongside the open will see 100 competitors from all over the UK rubbing shoulders with the top professionals. Making the championships a very special event. Entries close on the 12th of January.

“Since its inaugural event in 2001 the championship has become a firm fixture on the international squash calendar and the strength of the draw continues to amaze me. It is rare to have the squash of this level on our doorstep and anyone with an interest of the game really should think about coming along to have a look. It is also a great chance to see how our top players fare against those at the top of the world game.” Simon Boughton – Tournament Director.

Jonathan Tait, Club Manager at Edinburgh Sports Club, is delighted with this year’s entry: “This event continues to attract some of the world’s highest ranked professional players to give spectators a wonderful opportunity to watch squash of the highest quality being played over a four-day period”.

The Championships begin on Thursday 28th January, concluding with the finals on Sunday 31st January
