Asal and Elaraby Most Improved Player
of the Year
MEN
A big spread of responses here, with Youssef Ibrahim, Ng Eain Yow, Paul
Coll, Moustafa El Sirty (nine titles this year!), Sebastien Bonmalais
and Timmy Brownell all getting namechecked. However, it’s that man
Mostafa Asal who wins again for the impact he has made on the latter
stages of top-level tournaments at such a tender age.
Jamie Maddox: “I’ve never seen a player learn and
adapt to the highest level so quickly. You could literally see him
improve all aspects of his game and attitude each match he played.”
WOMEN
A big assortment of suggestions from our experts on this one, but it’s
Egypt’s Rowan Elaraby who nicks it with two votes among our panel. The
21-year-old Alexandrian climbed into the top 10 for the first time this
year and reached the quarter-finals at the British, Egyptian and El
Gouna Opens. USA’s Olivia Fliechter and Amanda Sobhy, and England’s Gina
Kennedy and Lucy Beecroft, were also picked out for praise.
Peter Schmidl: “Rowan made some good improvement in
game play and tactics throughout the year.”
