REPORTS

Japan’s Tsukue And Watanabe Victorious

The Japanese duo of Ryunosuke Tsukue and Satomi Watanabe were the victors at the Dynam Cup PSA SQ-Cube Open, as the pair both beat Hong Kong opposition to take more silverware in the 2021-2022 season.

Tsukue came into the men’s Challenger 5 level tournament as the No.4 seed, and he opened his account in Yokohama with a victory against compatriot and wildcard Tomotaka Endo in straight games, before then getting the better of No.5 seed Robert Andrew Garcia, also in three.

The World No.167 then defeated top seed Yassin Elshafei to make it through to the final in Yokohama, where he took on Hong Kong’s Tang Ming Hong, the tournament’s top seed. Tsukue won in straight games, dropping just nine games across the entire match, to claim his third title of the campaign.

In the women’s event, Japan’s Watanabe came into the tournament as the No.2 seed, and aiming for her fourth title of the season. After receiving a bye through the opening round, the Japanese woman then defeated compatriot Chinatsu Matsui in straight games to advance to the semi-finals.

Watanabe then overcame No.4 seed Akari Midorikawa in three to make the final, where she came up against top seed Cheng Nga Ching. She beat the Hongkonger in straight games to come through the tournament without dropping a game, to win her fourth title of the 2021-2022 season.
Finalist Set In Yokohama

After another busy day at the Yokohama Squash Stadium SQ-Cube, the finalists are set at the Dynam Cup PSA SQ-Cube Open, with the top two seeds in the women’s final, but a surprise in the men’s event.

That surprise comes in the form of Japan’s Ryunosuke Tsukue, the tournament’s No.4 seed, after he defeated top seed Yassin Elshafei in the semi-finals. The pair had both come through their respective last eight matches with ease earlier in the day, but Tsukue needed less than half an hour to get the job done in the semis, downing the Egyptian to reach the final.

He will now take on No.2 seed Tang Ming Hong after the Hongkonger, spent less than an hour on court over the course of Saturday’s play. He defeated India’s Rahul Baitha in a four-game contest, coming from behind to win in his quarter final match-up, before then downing another Indian, in No.3 seed Sandeep Ramachandran, to make it through to the final.

There were no surprises in the women’s event. As both of the top two seeds overcame their respective semi-final opponents in straight games. Hong Kong’s Cheng Nga Ching, the top seed, overcame compatriot Cheng Hei Fung in three, while Japan’s Satomi Watanabe downed Akari Midorikawa in straight games to advance.

The finals of the Dynam Cup PSA SQ-Cube Open will take place on Sunday, May 29 at the Yokohama Squash Stadium SQ-Cube, where the winners will take the titles.
