Day 5
Netherlands & England
Triumph In European Championships In France
While hosts France
suffered double disappointment at finishing as runners-up in both
European Team Squash Championships' finals before a packed crowd at
the Val de L'Arc sports centre in Aix-en-Provence, there
was joy for Netherlands after winning the women's crown for the
first time - and delight for England who won the men's title in
the premier European Squash Federation event for the 18th
successive year.
A surprise loss to third
seeds France in the final women's qualifying round put
Netherlands, the second seeds, into an unexpected semi-final against
England, the favourites who had beaten them in the previous seven
finals. But an inspired Dutch performance led to England's first defeat
in the 33-year history of the event – and an eighth successive
appearance in the climax, against first-time finalists France.
And Dutch stalwart
Vanessa Atkinson, the 34-year-old former world number one and world
champion who is making her 18th successive appearance in the event since
1993, played a sensational opener – avenging her earlier loss to
Camille Serme by beating the young French number one and new world
No10 9-11, 11-7, 11-3, 11-5 in 39 minutes.
But, to the delight of
the partisan crowd, record 11-time French national champion Isabelle
Stoehr battled back to beat Dutch number two Annelize Naude
9-11, 12-10, 9-11, 11-8, 11-8 in 65 minutes to bring the hosts back into
contention.
However, it was Dutch
player Orla Noom who prevailed in the decider, beating Maud
Duplomb 11-5, 11-8, 11-7 to give Netherlands their historic maiden
win in their 32nd appearance in the championships.
"That sort of
match, playing for your country, was more nerve-wracking than my World
Open final," admitted Atkinson to
www.squashsite.co.uk
afterwards. "The crowd were so noisy, I just had to try to block them
out and play my game - but playing in such an atmosphere has to lift
you.
"In the end I think it
came down to my experience against an up-and-coming player just out of
juniors. She played the same sort of game as the other day, but hitting
it low and hard doesn't work as well on a glass court, and I was finding
the corners better than last time.
"She was making errors
too, when I was feeling it physically. She'd give me a couple of points
which gave me a lift."
France's
hopes of fortunes in the men's final were dashed when top seeds
England defeated the second seeds 4/0 in the tenth final clash
between the two countries in the past 11 years! The win gives England
the title for the 18th year in row – the run beginning in the same
French city in 1993.
The opening encounter
was a brutal match between the countries' second strings – England's
former world number two James Willstrop and France's 34-year-old
ex-world number one Thierry Lincou. Clearly spurred on by the
home crowd, Lincou twice led his long-time European rival.
But Willstrop – whose
last defeat in the championships was to Lincou in 2006 – held his nerve
to survive 7-11, 11-1, 8-11, 11-9, 11-7 after 82 minutes.
In the second match,
world No6 Gregory Gaultier – playing in his home town – was
unable to dent the determined play of England number one Nick Matthew.
It took 53 minutes, with world number two Matthew prevailing 11-9, 11-9,
11-6 to put the visitors 2/0 ahead.
Convincing England wins
followed, however, as fourth string Daryl Selby beat Mathieu
Castagnet 12-10, 11-7, 11-1, and Peter Barker despatched
veteran French campaigner Renan Lavigne in his farewell match for
France 11-6, 11-5.
"I was pleased with
that," said Willstrop after his opening win. "His level seemed to drop
after those tough first and third games - I could feel it as soon as we
went back on court. I was pretty consistent throughout. If you beat
Thierry in front of a crowd like that you know you've played well."
In the play-offs for
third place, former champions England beat Ireland 2/1 in
the women's championship, and Netherlands defeated Wales
3/0 in the men's event.
There were some
outstanding performances in the play-offs for the lower places – none
more so than by Italy. 13th seeds in the men's event, Italy made
sure of inclusion in the top eight next year by finishing in fifth
place, beating fifth seeds Germany 4/0 in the play-off to record
their best result ever. The Italian women's team also earned a
best-ever sixth place finish after losing 2/1 to Germany in the
play-off for fifth place.
After four years out of
the top eight in the women's event, Scotland earned a return to
the elite group by beating Spain 2/1 in the play-off for seventh
place.
Czech Republic
made their debut in the men's championship in 1994 – and have now
established themselves in the top eight for the first time after
finishing in eighth place, narrowly losing the play-off for seventh
place to Scotland after a countback in games.
Lower in the hierarchy,
Slovakia and Ukraine will also leave Aix-en-Provence with
their best-ever results: The teams met in the play-off for 17th place –
with Slovakia winning 3/1 to record their best finish in five
appearances, with Ukraine's 18th place their highest finish in their
sixth successive appearance.

Day 4
France To Contest Both
European Finals In Aix-en-Provence
Hosts France will
contest both finals of the European Team Squash Championships for
the first time after successes in the semi-finals of premier
European Squash Federation event in Aix-en-Provence.
But the shock of the day
took place in the women's event when second seeds Netherlands
triumphed over the defending champions – inflicting England's first
defeat in the 33-year history of the championships.
Winners of the title
since the inaugural year of 1978, England started well when third string
Tania Bailey comfortably beat Orla Noom 11-6, 11-3, 11-9.
But Dutch number Vanessa Atkinson sprung one of the biggest
surprises of the tournament when she overturned England's world number
two Jenny Duncalf 11-3, 12-10, 8-11, 11-5 to level the tie.
With losses to England
in the past seven European finals, Netherlands might have been expected
to fall away at this point. But Dutch number two Annelize Naude
delivered one of the performances of her career to defeat England's
Sarah Kippax 11-8, 11-5, 8-11, 11-5 to clinch the tie 2/1 – and
produce the story of the championships.
"I went on thinking there was no pressure
on me, just give it a good go," Atkinson, a former world champion and
world number one, said after her upset over Duncalf. "But once you
start to sense a chance of winning you naturally get nervous, especially
in that last game.
"Jenny can put shots
away so quickly, I never felt comfortable however far ahead I was. It
was nice to be able to put shots away on this court though, as opposed
to the club courts which are so hot and bouncy ... especially that last
one!"
Naude was clearly elated
about her success: "I was very nervous, obviously, but I just had to
try to put the result out of my mind and play each point as it came,"
said the 33-year-old from Amsterdam. "I was ok for the first two games
but it started getting to me after that.
"Things were going my
way in those two games, I was able to play winners, but she put me under
pressure later in the match, I had to be more consistent and rally it
out.
"It's a great feeling to
win, to beat England at last, but we can't afford to celebrate too much,
there's another match to go ..."
In the final,
Netherlands will face third seeds France - for the second time in
three days - after beating Ireland 2/1. After Maud Duplomb
put the host ahead, and 11-times Irish champion Madeline Perry
levelled the tie after a 53-minute win over France's new world No10
Camille Serme, French stalwart Isabelle Stoehr clinched the
home team's first ever appearance in the final by beating Aisling
Blake 11-7, 11-9, 11-5.
"I was really enjoying
that at the end," explained the jubilant former world No10 Stoehr
later. "You never have those sort of moments when you're playing for
yourself, and when the crowd were chanting my name it gave me goosebumps,
but I knew I needed to calm down and concentrate.
"I'd lost to Aisling
last time we played so I knew it wasn't going to be easy, but you can't
help get a lift from an atmosphere, an occasion like this and having
such a great crowd behind you.
"So, we're in the final
for the first time, in France, it's all there for us but we can't expect
it to be easy, the Dutch will have taken great confidence from beating
England, so we have to be at our best again tomorrow ..."
England
and France will meet in the predicted men's final after 4/0
victories over Wales and Netherlands, respectively, in the
semi-finals.

Day 3
France Upset Netherlands In Women's European Qualifiers
Hosts France boosted
their chances of reaching both finals in the European Team Squash
Championships after upsetting second seeds Netherlands in the
final women's qualifying round of the premier European Squash Federation
event in Aix-en-Provence.
Former French champion
Isabelle Stoehr put the third seeds in the driving seat with an 11-7,
11-9, 9-11, 11-9 win over Dutch number two Annelize Naude. Then
Camille Serme, the rising French star who celebrates a career-high world
No10 ranking this month, saved several game balls in the fourth game against
Vanessa Atkinson to beat the former world champion 11-9, 11-9, 3-11,
14-12 to clinch victory for the hosts.
After topping the Pool B
tables, France's reward is a semi-final clash with Ireland, the
fourth seeds who lost to England in their final tie in Pool A – but
gave the title-holders a shock in the top string clash when Irish veteran
Madeline Perry battled to a 5-11, 11-6, 11-9, 9-11, 11-8 win over
England's world No2 Jenny Duncalf in a rare match defeat for the
32-year champions.
Team newcomer Sarah
Kippax had earlier put England in the lead with a straight games win
over Irish number two Aisling Blake before England stalwart Tania
Bailey assured the top seeds of overall victory in Pool A with an 11-4,
11-6, 11-2 defeat of Laura Mylotte.
England will now face
Netherlands in the other semi-final - in a repeat of the final for the past
seven years.
France,
the second seeds, will also contest one of the men's semi-finals after a
comprehensive 4/0 win over Wales. The hosts will take on fourth
seeds Netherlands - but Wales, the fourth seeds, also qualified for
the semi-finals, their 13th appearance in the past 14 years!
Wales will take on defending
champions England. The top seeds despatched Netherlands 4/0, despite
fifth string Adrian Grant twisting his ankle at 2/0 up against
Sebastian Weenink, but recovering to beat the Dutchman 11-6, 11-2, 8-11,
11-2.
Sweden, Czech Republic
and Italy achieved notable qualifying successes to earn places in the
men's 5-12th place play-offs. Czech Republic, the 15th seeds whose highest
finish to date is 14th, defeated tenth seeds Denmark 3/1 to top Pool
D.
A revitalised Italian squad
beat Switzerland 3/1 to become runaway winners of Pool F. Italy, the
13th seeds, are looking for their first last eight finish since 2001.
Sweden, the 11th seeds,
topped Pool E by claiming their fourth successive victory after a 3/1 win
over Hungary. European champions twice, in 1980 and 1983, Sweden are
hoping for their first top eight finish since 2007.

Report from Ian McKenzie in
Aix-en-Provence
ENGLAND IN POOL MATCHES
Matthew Fight
England
started the European Championships with a straight forward win against
Germany but against Finland Nick Matthew had a rude awakening after
taking a break following the Canary Wharf event. Olli Tuominen snatched
a two game lead caressing Matthew’s ricocheting shots into the front
corners as the Englishman’s did not quite find his usual reactions or
feel for the pace of the ball.
Court 1 at the Set Club,
in Aix en Provence, a beautifully rambling affair with 12 courts down
numerous corridors, bars and viewing areas, was hot warmed by the
Provence sun and the body heat of the crammed throngs. It was all open
to the air and elements it was just that the air was hot.
Matthew’s predicament hit
him like a bucket of cold water and he got a jump on his opponent in the
third despite the odd uncharacteristic error. The third was collected
11-8, the fourth 11-7 and at 6-3 the threat largely seemed to be over.
Still Tuominen persevered, scored with a fantastic drop, Matthew tinned
(his margins were just a bit fine) as the Finn hung into the rallies
courageously to level at 8-all in the fifth. Matthew had little time to
wonder how he got into this position but he would have thought about it
later. A backhand volley cut down deceptively crosscourt died short and
faded wide out of Tuominen’s reach before he was able to read it. He was
then stroked on a loosish ball, as referees do, and despite his
desperate recovers when seemingly beaten several times earned an
opportunity to attack in frantic play, just tinned and it was all over
11-8.
There was a standing
ovation for both players and Matthew was thumped on the back heartily by
his team-mates and congratulated by coach David Campion.
On Thursday England face
Netherlands. The athletic Laurens Jan Anjema can be a handful but in
reality England are too strong in the pool matches. It will take two
upsets for likely finalists France to upset them.
England women have moved
smoothly through with wins over Germany and Italy.

Evergreen Ryan Keeps Ireland's European Hopes Alive
Aged 40 and celebrating his 23rd successive appearance in the
European Team Squash Championship, Derek Ryan pulled off a stunning
five-game win over a 23-year-old world-ranked opponent in the first
qualifying rounds of the premier European Squash Federation event
to lead seventh seeds Ireland to a 2-2 draw over Wales,
the third seeds, in the men's championship in Aix-en-Provence in
France.
The eight-time Irish champion twice came from behind to defeat Welshman
Peter Creed – born only a year before Ryan made his European
championship debut in 1988 – 7-11, 11-4, 4-11, 11-3, 11-4 in 57
minutes.
The win put Ireland 2/1 ahead in the tie – but a sterling performance by
Welsh veteran Alex Gough, a championship debutant in 1990, tied
the tie with an 11-8, 11-6, 13-11 win over Irish number four Niall
Rooney.
In
the other men's tie in Pool B, local hero Gregory Gaultier, the
world No6 from Aix, led hosts France to a popular 4/0 win over
Scotland.
Top seeds England, the defending champions who are expected to
meet France in the final for the tenth time in the last 11 years,
cruised to a 4/0 win over fifth seeds Germany - with British
national champion Nick Matthew leading the way with an 11-9,
11-6, 11-4 win over Simon Rosner, the 22-year-old from Paderborn
who won his fourth German national title at the weekend.
But the other tie in Pool A saw fourth seeds Netherlands survive
a close battle with Finland, beating the eighth seeds 3/1.
Dutchman Laurens Jan Anjema, the world No11, was taken to five
games before overcoming 11-times Finnish national champion Olli
Tuominen – but the Finn hero was Matias Tuomi who beat
Piedro Schweertman, ranked almost 80 places higher in the world,
.7-11, 11-5, 11-9, 11-7.
A
new-look line-up saw title-holders England earn a comfortable 3/0
win over Germany in the opening qualifying round in the women's
event. Dominique Lloyd-Walter and Sarah Kippax
celebrated their maiden appearances for their country with wins over
Germans Pamela Hathway and Sina Wall, respectively, before
long-standing European championship campaigner Tania Bailey
rounded off the rout with an 11-0, 11-0, 11-5 win over Franziska
Hennes.
But second seeds Netherlands, runners-up for the past seven
years, were tested by sixth seeds Denmark in Pool B. Top-ranked
Dane Line Hansen scored an impressive 11-9, 11-9, 6-11, 6-11,
11-9 win over Vanessa Atkinson, the Dutch star making her 18th
successive appearance since 1993. But solid wins by Annelize Naude
and Orla Noom saw Netherlands win by a 2/1 margin.

Europe's Top Squash Stars
Head For Aix-en-Provence
Despite travel problems
caused by the recent Iceland volcano eruption, the 2010 European Team
Squash Championships will take place as planned next week at Set
Squash in Aix-en-Provence in France from 27 April to 1 May.
The leading European
Squash Federation championship is celebrating its 38th Men's event
since 1973 and its 33rd Women's event since 1978. 27 nations will
compete in the 2010 men's event and 21 in the women's.
In a bid to help
National federations who might have players stranded overseas, the ESF
has introduced a temporary amendment to its rule regarding the maximum
number of players that can be nominated for each squad – which will now
be up to eight men and seven women.
England
are seeded to retain their titles in both the men's and women's events.
But France, runners-up to England in all but one of the previous
ten men's finals, will be hoping that home advantage will lead to their
first title success in 36 appearances since 1975.
The England men's squad
will be led by Nick Matthew, the world No2 from Sheffield,
supported by James Willstrop, Peter Barker, Daryl Selby,
Adrian Grant and Alister Walker – ranked 5, 8, 9, 13 and
14, respectively, in the world.
Second seeds France
boast a squad featuring Gregory Gaultier, Thierry Lincou,
Renan Lavigne, Mathieu Castagnet and Gregoire Marche
– ranked 5, 7, 32, 50 and 82, respectively.
Croatia,
Turkey, Cyprus and Slovakia will be returning to
the men's championships after being absent last year.
England will hope to
extend their remarkable 32-year reign as women's champions since the
inaugural event in 1978. But the 2010 squad will be missing two of the
country's leading players Alison Waters, the British National
champion, and Laura Massaro – both of whom are still recovering
from injury.
However, Yorkshire's
world No2 Jenny Duncalf will be celebrating her seventh
successive appearance in the event, leading a squad which will include
Tania Bailey, the former world No4 who made her European Team
Championship debut in 1999. But the squad will also include three event
debutantes: Sarah Kippax, Dominique Lloyd-Walter and
Lauren Briggs, ranked 21, 24 and 28, respectively, in the world.
